Alien Invasion is a browser-based reimagining of the iconic Galaxy Defender formula — one of the most influential arcade games ever made. You control a laser cannon at the bottom of the screen, defending Earth against descending waves of alien spacecraft that advance relentlessly downward while firing back at your position.
The game captures the tension of the original concept: aliens march left and right in formation, dropping to a lower row each time they reach the screen edge. The closer they get to the bottom, the more urgent and intense the gameplay becomes.
What makes Alien Invasion compelling beyond its retro roots is the escalating difficulty. Each wave cleared increases the aliens' movement speed, compresses your safe window for repositioning, and introduces new attack patterns. Defensive bunkers (where available) degrade under both alien fire and your own shots, adding a resource management layer to the shooting mechanics.
Key Features:
- Progressive wave-based difficulty
- Classic retro-inspired design
- Instant browser play — no download needed
- Free to play on desktop and mobile
Getting Started:
Alien Invasion follows the classic fixed-shooter format with clear objectives:
- Understand the Formation — At the start of each wave, a grid of alien ships fills the upper portion of the screen. They march left and right, descending one row each time they reach the screen edge.
- Move Your Cannon — Use left/right controls to slide your cannon along the bottom of the screen. Position yourself under an alien to aim, or dodge incoming projectiles.
- Fire at Aliens — Only one projectile from your cannon is active at a time in most versions. Fire, let it travel, and fire again. Aim carefully — missed shots waste time while aliens advance.
- Prioritize Targets — Shoot aliens in the bottom row of each column first. This prevents those aliens from reaching the bottom sooner and gains you the most time. Alternatively, clear full columns from the edge inward to slow the formation's side-to-side travel.
- Use Bunkers for Cover — Stationary bunkers between you and the aliens absorb shots from both sides. Use them strategically — duck behind them when multiple projectiles are incoming, but be aware your own shots also degrade them.
- Watch for the UFO — A bonus spacecraft (the classic UFO or flying saucer) periodically crosses the top of the screen. Shooting it scores significant bonus points.
- Complete Waves — Clear all aliens in the formation to advance to the next wave. Speed and difficulty increase with each wave cleared.
- Learn the controls before attempting difficult levels.
- Focus on the objective shown at the start of each round.
- Practice early levels to build confident muscle memory.
Desktop Controls:
- Left Arrow (←) / A — Move cannon left
- Right Arrow (→) / D — Move cannon right
- Spacebar / Z — Fire laser projectile
- P — Pause game (where supported)
- Enter — Start game / advance through menu screens
Mobile Controls:
- Left virtual button — move cannon left
- Right virtual button — move cannon right
- Fire button (center or right) — launches a shot
- Tap screen — in simplified versions, tap right/left of cannon to move, tap center to fire
Pro Tip: Control Tips: - Keyboard play on desktop gives the fastest input response — highly recommended for competitive scoring - Develop a rhythm of move-then-fire rather than firing while moving — stationary shots are more accurate - The cannon can only have one projectile on-screen at a time in classic mode; wait for your shot to hit or exit the top before firing again - On mobile, the touch buttons may require slight habituation before achieving consistent accuracy
Tips for Beginners:
- Alien Invasion rewards strategic target selection and cool-headed play under escalating pressure.
- Target Priority — The Most Important Tip: - Clear the bottom row of aliens first.
Advanced Strategies:
- The flying saucer appears at regular intervals. Tracking this timing allows you to be positioned on the left or right screen edge (where it enters) to immediately target it.
- UFO bonus points can significantly boost your total score — prioritize it when it appears without abandoning critical defensive positioning.
High-Score Tip: Wave Progression: - As waves progress, alien movement speeds up dramatically.
