Galaxy Defender is one of the most historically significant video games ever created, and this HTML5 browser version faithfully preserves the mechanics that made the original 1978 arcade game a cultural phenomenon.
The game's genius lies in its escalating pressure system. As you shoot aliens, the remaining ones speed up — paradoxically, your success makes the game harder. The last few aliens of each wave move at frightening speed, turning careful methodical shooting into panicked last-second targeting.
Five defensive bunkers provide limited cover from alien fire but degrade over time under bombardment from both sides. Managing bunker health, positioning strategically behind remaining cover, and knowing when to abandon a compromised bunker for open ground are the tactical elements that separate skilled players from average ones.
Key Features:

Getting Started:
Galaxy Defender' rules are elegantly simple:
- The Alien Formation — A grid of alien ships (typically 11 columns × 5 rows) fills the upper screen. They march left and right, descending one row every time they hit the screen edge.
- Shoot Them Down — Move your cannon left and right. Fire upward — your shot destroys any alien it hits. One shot is active at a time.
- Use the Bunkers — Four bunkers between you and the aliens absorb shots. Use them as cover when alien fire becomes dense. Both your shots AND alien shots gradually destroy the bunkers.
- Avoid Alien Fire — Aliens shoot projectiles downward at random from the bottom of their columns. Move out of the way — a single hit destroys your cannon (one life lost).
- Speed Increases — As you eliminate aliens, the remaining ones speed up. The sound of the alien march accelerates to match — a brilliant audio cue. The final alien of a wave moves extremely fast.
- Watch for the UFO — A mystery spacecraft crosses horizontally at the very top of the screen. It is worth variable bonus points (from 50 to 300 in the original). Shoot it for a significant score boost.
- Clear the Wave — Eliminate all aliens to advance to the next, more difficult wave. Aliens start lower on the screen with each new wave and move faster from the start.
- Game Over Conditions: - Any alien reaching the bottom of the screen ends the game - Losing all lives ends the game
Desktop Controls:
- Left Arrow (←) / A — Move cannon left
- Right Arrow (→) / D — Move cannon right
- Spacebar / Z / X — Fire laser projectile
- Enter — Start game or advance after game over
- P — Pause (where supported)
Mobile Controls:
- Tap left — move cannon left
- Tap right — move cannon right
- Tap center fire button — shoot
- Virtual buttons are standard in mobile versions; some allow tap-direction control where tapping left of the cannon moves it left
Pro Tip: Positioning: - Stay in motion.
Tips for Beginners:
- Galaxy Defender has been studied competitively for decades.
- Prioritize Column Elimination: - Clear the rightmost and leftmost alien columns first.
Advanced Strategies:
- Early game: use bunkers heavily for cover. Their degradation is manageable when many aliens remain.
- Late game: bunkers that are heavily degraded can actually be shot through by both sides — avoid positioning behind a bunker with significant gaps.
- You can deliberately shoot gaps in your own bunkers to create firing lanes to specific alien positions.
High-Score Tip: The End-Game: - When fewer than 10 aliens remain, they move very fast.
